Its a clam shell style that with one quick motion your fishing rod is lifted straight out into the fish fighting position. The downrigger mount allows great position of the rod over top of the rigger for quicker access.

The rod holder is best opened by grabbing it in front and to the rear of the holder and lifting up in one quick motion.

When you install the rod holder I have found that by putting a little reel lube on the hinges it will break in the rod holder quicker and allow faster and easier opening.
