Well we left home to head to the mountains hunting on sunday after I got off work, we met a friend of ours from North Dakota about 1/2 way there.Well we finally got there and set up about 11:30 and finally settled down to sleep about 1 am. We decide to sleep in a little in the morning and do some scouting since we had never hunted there before.
We woke up to rain amd mist and temps in the low 30's it stayed like that until wednesday afternoon. We hunted through the bad weather and didn't see any elk. Wednesday late morning we decided to go visit a friend of mine about 30 miles from our camp and after lunch we headed back. Janet and I walked down an old logging road that we had found while scouting, we walked a little over a mile and found a nice looking meadow so we decided to head in towards the meadow about 30 yards and do some calling, after about 1/2 hour we heard and saw nothing so as we got back to the road we jumped an elk from the lodge poles on the other side, it was coming to the cow calls. the next morning my friend from ND. and I walked down that same road and bumped and elk out of the same area.

We decide to move a little and do some cow calling to see what would happen, nothing. That evening Janet and I went in there early and set up 2 Montana decoys,(miss september and the flasher) after settling in we tried some soft cow calling and about 30 seconds after we finished we had a bull come in behind us the wind swirled and he was gone. 20 minutes later 3 cows came in straight to the decoys Janet had a 23 yrd shot at one of them and hit a tree. we kept them cows there for 1/2 hour then I got a shot at one at 42 through a 4-6" wide opening and my vane hit a branch and my arrow sailed under her chest. Those cows still didn't leave for another 10 minutes. Those decoys kept them there I'm pretty sure especially after 2 misses. After the cows finally left we gathered up our things and got out of there before they came back and figured ot what was actually going on.

The next evening we ended up in the same area set up in the same general spot Janet alittle in front of the decoys and about 15 yards to the side and me about 20 yards behind them try calling elk past her. After some cow calling I heard a bugle then a short time later another one and real close (only about 50 yards) Janet could see him but i didn't until he covered another 10 yards. I was trying to video Janet shooting him but he stopped 20 yards from her and she had no shot he then started moving to my left trying to get down wind of the decoys he was curling his lip and licking his nose( I thought that was cool.) and came to about 10 yards from me. I was already at full draw and when he presented a shot I released, he spun around i cow called he stopped and looked back at the decoys again then started walking slowly away he went about 40 yards and fell over he was done.

After 3 trips back in to pack him out we were whooped. We hunted for two more days trying to get an elk for Janet but no luck.
There's always next year.
I used a Bowtech Destroyer 350 60#
Easton axis arrows and G5 Tekan broadheads.
